Volunteer Today

Mobile App and Responsive Website
Project Overview
Volunteer Today is a BC based organization focused on helping adults get involved in their local community by providing a vast array of services such as Volunteering, Donating, fundraising, and training. The organization needs a tool that helps people volunteer to causes located near them so they can there can be more youth and adult involvement in their communities

The problem: Active users want a useful, simple and clear place to volunteer so they can get involved in their community.

The goal: Design an app that allows users to volunteer to a variety of different volunteer postings from various causes, near
their location.
My Contributions
My role: UX Designer leading the app and responsive website from concept to delivery.

Responsibilities: Conducting Interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, Iterating on designs, determine information architecture and responsive web design.
Research Summary
I conducted interviews specifically on users who have a record of volunteering in their community. Most interview participants said that there is problems such as homeless, crime, littering and not much change in their local community, so they would like a platform where they can volunteer to causes that are happening in the community they live in and get involved. The feedback gathered through research made it very clear that users will be open and willing to work against eliminating these issues in their communities if they had a tool were they could volunteer.

Persona

Paper wireframes

I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with different ideas for the layout of the mobile app. My thinking was to create an easy to use and useful app that will get people to volunteer to causes near them.

Digital wireframes

After ideating and drafting some paper wireframes I created the initial homepage design for the volunteering app. This design focuses on providing personalized guidance through search features and volunteer opportunities in my users area.

To prepare for usability testing, I created a low-fidelity prototype that connected the user flow of volunteering for a volunteer position. Components were made to provide a better testing experience for my users.

Usability Findings

Mockups

Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like providing a clear section of the homepage to search for opportunities and added features to personalize their search to their area.

Additional changes included changing the buttons of the sign up page to be more clear and adding dividers for better proximity.

The high-fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, including design changes made after the usability study.

With the app designs completed, I started work on designing the responsive website. I created the Volunteer Today sitemap to guide the navigation of the website from the homepage and also provide other services besides volunteering.

Mobile

The designs for screen size variation included mobile, tablet and desktop. I optimized the designs to fit specific user needs of each device and screen size

Takeaways

Impact: Users shared that the app made them want to volunteer because of how accessible it was to find causes they can contribute to in their local area.

What I learned: I learned that even though this project was a big topic, it is important to always contribute to the place you live in, and in the design process, aligning specific user needs helped me come up with solutions that are both feasible and useful.
